Disney Pixar Brave
Movie Premier Review

First, I have to thank Disney for allowing us to attend the movie premier for Brave. It was a wonderful opportunity and Ethan felt so special  for getting to see it “Before any other kid in the world” (his words) The theater was packed as expected and a great time was had by all who attended.

If you’re a constant reader over here at Grandma Juice, you know we’ve been showing trailers for Disney Pixar Brave for weeks now. We’ve been seriously pumped full of anticipation! If you haven’t seen it yet, I won’t completely spoil it for you with every detail but just enough to get you excited!

The set-up for this movie is great. There’s very real family relationships we all can relate to; animated flick or not! The mother-daughter relationship is immediately understood and quite dynamic. Being on both sides of mother / daughter – I felt empathy and very connected to each. In my opinion, the best job of being ‘real’ when incorporating a princess to tell the intricate relationship that is mother / daughter.

You can not talk about Disney Pixar Brave without mentioning how beautifully cinematic it is. Holy Cow!! The rolling hills of Scotland are big, green and lush. So vivid you can almost smell it. As someone who never (never!!!) sees 3D movies because they usually give me a headache, I was more than a bit skeptical about seeing Brave in 3D.  I’m happy to report that I loved it! And NO headache. We decided that the whole 3D experience has come such an incredibly long way from 1982’s Friday The 13th 3D! (cheesy) Also, we think Disney Pixar Brave is the only movie yet that 3D actually adds something to the experience. You know, other than cheesy effects of course. I don’t think I have words to adequately describe it, you really, really need to see this if for no other reason than the awe of it’s technical brilliance!

The action scenes are big, and feel very real. Especially viewing it on the big screen with full, booming sound.  The jokes are funny, the characters are each a work of art in their own right, and it is entertaining. We laughed, we each had a slight tear at the end. It was everything you’d expect and hope for in a Disney Pixar collaboration.

I do want to mention that Brave did deserve the PG rating. There are some pretty scary moments throughout the movie when the demon bear, Mordu, charges and attacks. For maybe 3-4 minutes, scattered throughout the movie, Ethan covered his eyes and/or ears. I think some of it was due to sitting directly under a speaker but he did tell our guest host that some parts were ‘SO SCARY’… The comedic relief of the 3 little brothers totally made up for any fear that may have lingered though.

And, I really appreciated that we finally have a ‘Princess’ who is not all about finding her prince! No ‘woe-is-me’ for Merida! From her fiery, red locks to her super strong attitude, you know she’s setting all little girls of the new generation up to find their inner strength and not sit around waiting to be rescued! And, the relationship that evolves and grows between her and Queen mom Elinor has all the true to life eliminates that make it believable. It may be set in ancient Scottish times, but the life lessons and ‘moral of the story’ is very relevant.

We give Disney Pixar Brave 2 very enthusiastic thumbs up! Thumbs WAY up!

In theaters TODAY! June 22, 2012. Don’t walk, run…
