Back in ‘the day’ the Boys and Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) was a fun, cool place to hang out after school. The term ‘latch key kids’ was just becoming a thing and there were few moms who even worked, let alone so many single parent homes. You showed up, got a snack and then hung out with your friends. The boys played basketball and the girls talked about… well, boys. It was a social gathering. Today, the Boys and Girls Clubs are way more than just a place to hang.

With today’s economy being in the toilet and so many single parent homes, oftentimes kids are left to their own devices and have to make their own way on the streets. The Boys and Girls Clubs of America today is way more than just a fun place ‘to hang’. For many young kids, it’s a necessity.  Aside from some good fun off the streets and a snack, they offer programs & services designed to promote and enhance the development of boys and girls. They are instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence that sadly, many kids don’t get at home.

One of their newest missions is to encourage healthy eating. While some take it for granted, access to fresh fruits and vegetables is becoming less and less available, even though they play a crucial part in growing up and staying healthy.

Encourage Healthy Eating

In their effort to help encourage healthy eating and gain access to more fruits and vegetables, the Boys and Girls Clubs & Amway have joined forces to help educate their young kids on the importance of healthy diets and lifestyles. And, what’s the best way to get kids on board with any new venture? Get them involved and excited about the process! Amway is doing just that!  They are making it possible for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America to start growing their own community gardens!

Boys and Girls Clubs, Amway & Positive Sprouts

Amway has kicked off The Positive Sprouts Campaign by donating 150 ‘Garden in a Box’ kits filled with fruit and vegetable seeds and all the  supplies needed to start growing community gardens of their own! This is how you get kids excited about healthy eating! Not just talking and lecturing but letting them get in and help grow healthy fruits & veggies. Amway has made it possible for 4,000 Boys and Girls Clubs to learn about healthy eating habits through the Positive Sprouts Curriculum.

Boys and Girls Clubs, POSITIVE SPROUTS Sustainability Grants

Amway is providing $30,000 in Sustainability Grants to ten  Boys and Girls Clubs who previously received community gardens from Amway. These funds are being used to assist Clubs with the maintenance of their garden as well as improve nutrition for Club members.

Want to know how you can get involved and help Amway to encourage these kids in learning healthy eating habits? Maybe even make a donation to The Positive Sprouts Campaign!

I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Boys and Girls Clubs of America and Amway. I received a promotional item as a thank-you for participating. All opinions are my own.

  1. WOW, Such a great program! That is a good way to get kids excited about it- to see the fruits and veggies grow right in front of them. Very nice!! Go Amway!

  2. I grew up in a small town so we didn’t have a Boys & Girls Club but now that I’m in a larger community, I understand and see the need for them. Love that Amway has partnered with them in an effort to teach them what a fruit and vegetable is and how they can actually grow them.
